Scripts Help
On this page, you'll find the answers to some of the frequently asked questions concerning Messenger Plus! scripts. If you can't find the answer you're searching for on this page, please post a message in the scripts section of the forum.
How do I use a script?
How you use a script varies from one script to another. First, you should read the How to use this script section in the script's details page, then, check the scripts' various windows, if any, for more details.
The following information applies to all scripts:
- Both Windows Live Messenger and Messenger Plus! Live need to be installed.
- Download the script, open it, accept the warning and press Import.
- The script is now ready to be used. See the details page of the script for more help if needed.
A script I installed is causing problems, how can I correct this?
All the scripts listed in the official database are tested before they're added to the site. However, despite the verifications we perform, different combinations of Messenger versions, computer specifications and add-ons may cause several unexpected problems. Here is how to solve script related problems:
- Go to the Messenger Plus! preferences panel and select the Scripts tab.
- Un-check the script you just installed or, to completely get rid of it, select it and click on Remove.
- Restart Messenger. If possible, please report the problem you just experienced on the forum.
If, for some reasons, the scripts you installed prevent you from accessing Messenger Plus!'s preferences or crashes Messenger, the Maintenance Wizard of Messenger Plus! will help you correct the situation.
- Open Windows' Control Panel (Start > Control Panel).
- Select "Add/Remove Programs" (Windows XP) or "Programs and Features" (Windows Vista).
- In the list of programs, double click on "Messenger Plus! Live".
- Choose "Repair Messenger", leave the first 2 options checked and click Next.
- Once the reparation is complete, restart Messenger. Your software will now be running with no script running.
My virus scanner says a script is suspicious, why?
Some virus scanners, like McAfee, tend to wrongly report any script as being suspicious. When installing a Messenger Plus! script downloaded from this web site, you can safely ignore these warnings. Security and privacy are two important subjects for us, we wouldn't add anything suspicious to the public database. The reason why some virus scanners assume a script should be blocked is simply because the script connects to the internet (often to check for new versions or to get some data you requested). You can turn off the warnings in your anti-virus, but keep in mind this will also disable warnings for non-Plus! scripts. Turning off ScriptStopper may also result in a warning about Virus Protection/Security Protection requiring attention.
For McAfee VirusScan 2007 Products:
- Doubleclick the SecurityCenter icon in the system tray.
- Click Computer and Files.
- Click Configure on the box to the right.
- Click Script Scanning protection is enabled (Note: If script scanning is already disabled, the item will not say enabled but disabled and it is OK to just leave it).
- Select Off and close the window.
For Older McAfee VirusScan products (before 2007):
- Right-click on the security-center icon in the system tray.
- Choose VirusScan, and go to Options.
- Under ActiveShield, click Advanced.
- Click Exploits, and uncheck the box: Enable ScriptStopper (recommended).
